Dubai is a unique and fascinating cocktail of ‘east-meets-west’ and ‘old-meets-new’. All year round glorious sunshine, warm inviting Arabian Gulf waters and a majestic desert tell only one side of the story.

A destination with a difference, Dubai effortlessly fuses old and new, morden and traditional, city and beach. In centre Dubai, you can enjoy the peace and serenity of an impressive mosque before plunging into streets of Downtown, where restaurants, bars and nightclubs entertain late into the night.

Beyond the hotels and resorts, there are endless opportunities to experience the diversity of Dubai. From 4-wheel drives or camel riding in the desert to moonlit cruises along the Creek and skinning and tobogganing in the Snowdome – there are activities to suit every taste. For the less energetic, the fascinating Dubai Museum is a great way to spend an afternoon, while the malls and souqs offer hours of retail therapy.

Dubai is a stirring alchemy of profound traditions and ambitious futuristic vision wrapped into starkly evocative desert splendour, is truly a cosmopolitan blend of cultures, cuisines and citizens from every corner of the world.

It’s hard not to admire Dubai for its indefatigable verve, ambition and ability to dream up and realise projects that elsewhere would never get off the drawing board. This is a superlative-craving society that has birthed audaciously high buildings and palm-shaped islands. Sci-fi concepts such as flying taxis, a lightning-fast hyperloop train and an army of robocops are all reflections of a mindset that fearlessly embraces the future. And with many more grand projects in the pipeline for World Expo 2020, it’s clear that Dubai is a city firmly in charge of writing its own narrative.

Shopping Haven

Dubai is a top retail haunt that hosts not one but two huge annual shopping festivals. Shopping is a leisure activity here and malls are much more than just mere collections of stores. Some look like an Italian palazzo or a Persian palace and lure visitors with surreal attractions such as an indoor ski slope or a giant aquarium. Traditional souqs, too, are beehives of activity humming with timeless bargaining banter. Meanwhile, a new crop of urban-style outdoor malls has expanded the shopping spectrum yet again.

Nocturnal Action

After dark, Dubai sometimes seems like a city filled with lotus eaters, forever on the lookout for a good time. Its shape-shifting party spectrum caters for just about every taste, budget and age group. From flashy dance temples, sleek rooftop terraces and sizzling beach clubs to fancy cocktail caverns and concerts under the stars, Dubai delivers hot-stepping odysseys. Most of the nightlife centres on the fancy hotels, but there’s no shortage of more wholesome diversions either, including shisha lounges, community theatre, live-music venues and the sparkling new Dubai Opera.

Cultural Dynamism

With Emiratis making up only a fraction of the population, Dubai is a bustling microcosm peacefully shared by cultures from all corners of the world. This diversity expresses itself in the culinary landscape, fashion, music and performance. Although rooted in Islamic tradition, this is an open society where it’s easy for newcomers and visitors to connect with myriad experiences, be it eating like a Bedouin, dancing on the beach, shopping for local art or riding a camel in the desert. Dubai is a fertile environment conducive to breaking down cultural barriers and preconceptions.

Dubai’s Iconic Buildings

Burj Khalifa

The world’s tallest building stacks up at a cloud-tickling 828m. For the design, American architect Adrian Smith found inspiration in the desert flower Hymenocallis or spider lily, whose patterning systems are embodied in Islamic architecture. The tower is designed as three petals arranged around a central core. As it rises from the flat base, the petals are set back in an upward-spiralling pattern.

Burj Al Arab

The Burj was completed in 1999 and is set on an artificial island 300m from the shore. The 60-floor, sail-shaped structure is 321m high. A translucent fibreglass wall serves as a shield from the desert sun during the day and as a screen for an impressive light show each night. It remains the iconic symbol of Dubai.

Cayan Tower

Stretching skyward for 307m, it may not be the tallest residential tower in the Dubai Marina, but it’s certainly a building with twist: a 90° spiral over the course of its height, to be precise. Aside from looking cool, the design actually reduces wind forces on the building and direct solar radiation.

Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club

When you cross the bridges over the Creek from Bur Dubai South, you’ll notice the pointed white roof of the clubhouse set amid artificial, undulating hillocks. The idea behind this 1993 design was to incorporate a traditional element – the white sails of a dhow (traditional wooden boat) – into the form and style of the building.

Dubai International Financial Centre

Dubai’s stock exchange and leading international financial institutions are housed in a complex of six buildings surrounding a central 80m-high triumphal arch called the Gate. Designed by the American firm Gensler Associates, it sits on an axis with the Jumeirah Emirates Towers and the World Trade Centre, effectively framing these two landmarks.

Dusit Thani Dubai

(next to Interchange No 1) Sheikh Zayed Rd features many modern skyscrapers, but few are as eye-catching as this one. The 153m-high building has an inverted ‘Y’ shape – two pillars that join to form a tapering tower. It’s meant to evoke the Thai joined-hands gesture of greeting, which is appropriate for this Thai hotel chain, but some feel it looks more like a giant tuning fork.

Jumeirah Emirates Towers

These twin, triangular towers coated with silver-coated aluminium panels and topped with needle-nose spires are among the most iconic buildings along Sheikh Zayed Rd. The taller of the two (355m) houses offices, while the other (305m) is an ultra-luxe business hotel. A three-storey shopping mall connects the two.

Jumeirah Beach Hotel

This curvaceous S-shaped construction represents a wave, with the Gulf as its backdrop. The glimmering facades of the hotel and its close neighbour, the Burj Al Arab, are achieved by the use of reflective glass and aluminium. The two structures combined – a huge sail hovering over a breaking wave – symbolise Dubai’s maritime heritage.

National Bank of Dubai

In 2007 the National Bank of Dubai merged with Emirates Bank to form Emirates NBD, but its headquarters remain in this shimmering landmark overlooking the Creek. Designed by Carlos Ott and completed in 1997, it combines simple shapes to represent a dhow with a billowing sail, while the real-life dhows plying the Creek are reflected in its gold-coated glass facade.

Dubai residents love their beaches. Many who live in Jumeirah and the Dubai Marina, within splashing distance of the crystal-clear turquoise waters, make it a daily ritual to head down to the beach, while the rest of Dubai typically hits the sand on Fridays and Saturdays.

If you're not staying at a beachfront hotel fronted by its own sandy ribbon, you can either drop big dirham for a day guest pass, pay to chill at a snazzy beach club or go dipping for free at a public beach such as Al Mamzar near Sharjah or along Kite Beach, Sunset Beach or JBR Beach in Jumeirah. All have undergone enormous infrastructure improvements in recent years and now come with changing rooms, toilets, showers, sun lounger and umbrella rentals, sports facilities, a jogging track, playgrounds and kiosks.

Jumeirah Beach

Jumeirah Beach, with its picturesque surroundings, is undeniably one of the most popular as well as frequently visited tourist spots in Dubai. Once a major fishing and pearl farming centre, Jumeirah over the years has evolved into one of the city’s principal residential areas, particularly among elite families and western expatriates. Being the site of the former Chicago Beach Hotel, the beachfront area was previously known as Chicago Beach till late 1990s when it was demolished and the construction of Burj Al Arab began. Jumeirah is now administratively categorized into three neighborhoods: Jumeirah 1, Jumeirah 2 and Jumeirah 3. Apart from these, here are some of the key aspects that attract both locals and tourists to Jumeirah Beach.

Stretching for more than seven kilometers along the Arabian Gulf’s pristine waters, Jumeirah Beach’s idyllic setting offers an enjoyable yet memorable escape from the hassles of your hectic routine. The warm azure water, along with white sandy beach, enables you to immerse in your most preferred water sport activity – let it be swimming, sailing, banana boat riding, water skiing, scuba diving, sunbathing, jet skiing, windsurfing, parascending or snorkeling. Since life-guards keep an eye on the beach and its precincts on round the clock basis, you can be assured of utmost safety while you absorb in your favorite pursuit. However, be sure that you’re armed with proper skin protection measures such as sunscreen lotion / cream, hat, sunglasses etc. to combat the penetrating sunrays, especially when the temperature is at its peak during summer.

Jumeirah Beach District is home to some of the world-renowned attractions, the significant being Burj Al Arab – the only seven-star hotel that is touted as the 8th Wonder of the World, Grand Jumeirah Mosque, which is not only famed for its distinctive architecture style but also for its Sheik Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding that allows you to take a peep into Emirati as well as religious culture, and the Palm Jumeirah –the palm shaped, man-made island that houses a myriad of luxury apartments, villas and hotels such as the Palm Atlantis. Equally astounding is a variety of opulent resorts, hotels, and spa boutiques that grace the locality.

The restaurants and bars dotted across the beach will serve whatever your palate desires for after long hours of indulgence in beach activities, no matter it is Arabic delicacies, Italian pizzas, Chinese specialties, European treats or sumptuous international cuisines prepared by award-winning chefs. Speaking of nightlife in Jumeirah, the scene is chic, exuberant and glittery, with a slew of upscale bars, pubs and nightclubs becoming alive as the sun sets in.

The beach area abounds in parks as well as specialized play areas to keep your little ones busy throughout the day. Few to name are Jumeirah Beach Park that serves as a perfect venue for a family picnic, Jumeirah Open Beach Park offering exclusive children’s play area, Wild Wadi Water Park with a plethora of exhilarating slides and rides suitable for every age, and Umm Suqueim Park whose specialty is games and leisure facilities that comply with European standards.

Jumeirah Beach is only few blocks away from the city centre and is easily accessible from the Jumeirah Road. Transport options by way of metro system, regular bus and coach services allow you to reach the destination with much ease. Dubai International Airport is 30 kilometers away.

The Palm Jumeirah

The Palm Jumeirah

Palm Island is perhaps the most ambitious and unique of all mega real estate developments in Dubai, brimming with world class hotels and resorts, stunning beachfront villas, best in class dining establishments, marinas, water parks and shopping facilities. The brainchild of Sheik Mohammed Bin Rashid al Maktoum and erected by Al Nakheel Properties off the Dubai’s coast, the Palm represents artificial group of islands that are categorized into three: Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jebel Ali and Palm Deira. Occupying an area of about seven million square meters, the Palm holds the distinction of being the world’s largest man-made islands. Apart from these, there are many things that make this artificial archipelago a one-of-its-kind global vacation spot. The Palm, upon completion, stands as one of the world’s incomparable attractions, with its remarkable design and engineering marvel.

Speaking of the islands, the Palm Deira is the largest of all three islands. Slated to be developed as the commercial and residential capital of the archipelago – it will feature a variety of residential town houses, in addition to marinas, sport facilities and shopping malls. The smallest of the three islands, the Jumeirah is considered a haven for unlimited leisure and recreation. About 50% bigger than the Jumeirah is the Palm Jebel Ali that will be an entertainment spot for both adults and children.

Often referred to as the world’s eight wonder, the Palm Jumeirah boasts of UAE’s some of the best attractions, such as Atlantis Hotel that literally grace the Palm Jumeirah’s crescent, Trump International – a luxurious 300-room hotel at the trunk of the island, Oceana – a beachfront residential and resort development, Kingdom of Sheba – a unique project managed by Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, and Exotica Resort & Spa.

With its waters filled with exuberant marine life on the Arabian Gulf, the Palm provides excellent facilities to enable tourists and visitors to indulge in such activities as scuba diving and snorkeling.

Dubai Canal Boardwalk

Dubai Canal Boardwalk

A dream of the late Sheikh Rashid in the 1960s, the Dubai Canal was realised by his son, Sheikh Mohammed, in 2016. An extension of the historic Creek, the canal flows 12km from Ras Al Khor in the east to the Gulf in the west and will eventually be lined with restaurants, parks, marinas and a mall. For now, there’s a 3.2km boardwalk running from Business Bay to Jumeirah that’s devoid of greenery but still popular for a stroll.

Simply get off at Business Bay metro station, or catch a ferry or water taxi from one of nine new stations. Don’t miss the waterfall that cascades off the bridge spanning Sheikh Zayed Rd near the W Hotel at Al Habtoor City; it’s lit up at night and operates on sensors so it turns off when boats float past.
